Finding Jesus

Rick Kurtis
The morning came up bright and early for Mickey this one special day. Breakfast was on the table and the family was in the kitchen. Mickey came in and asked. “What’s for breakfast?”
His Mother turned around, “Mickey, where are your manners? Say good morning first.”
Mickey sat down at the table and whined. “Waaaa, I’m hungry.”
They all sat down and prayed, thanking God for all that they had and then they ate. When they had finished, Mickey went off to play a video game. His Mother stopped him and said. “No, not today. Today we are starting something special. Now go wash up, brush your teeth and comb your hair, then put on the clothes that I laid out on your bed. Now go,” and she pushed Mickey toward the bedroom. “And make it quick,” she added.
Mickey had an angry look on his face, “But I don’t want to go to church. I want to play my game.”
Mom answered back. “You are not going to church. We are doing something special today. Now go.”
Mickey stormed off in a huff but did what his Mother wanted. Dressed and ready, they left their home on Grassland Drive and headed down the road. Mom and Mickey stood in front of their church and Mickey started to stomp his feet and whined. “You said we weren’t going to church.”
Mom looked at Mickey and said. “You’re not, I am. You are going to a special room called Sunday school.”
          Mickey throws a big fit. “I don’t want to go. I don’t, I don’t, I don’t,” and tugged away.
His Mother pulled him back, “Okay, then it is church.”
With that said, Mickey changed his attitude and followed his Mom inside the church. Mom walked Mickey to a room with a lot of other kids in it. They were talking and laughing, sitting at the tables that had crayons and paper on them. Now Mickey didn’t feel so bad. His Mom left when Mickey sat down on one of the chairs.
There was a Teacher in the front of the classroom gathering booklets from out of a box. She told the kids to settle down so she could start the class. When she turned around, Mickey thought that she looked like an angel. The Teacher smiled, “Okay class, today we are going to start with Christmas. Yes, Christmas in June and I have a present for each and every one of you.”
The Teacher handed out the booklets and started to tell them the story about Jesus from the day that He was born. For that hour, she taught them about the love and kindness and how Jesus can guide them on the right path. Mickey hung on every word while going through the booklet. On the last page was a plastic little figurine of Jesus. The Teacher said. “This is the present that I give to you. It’s called, Jesus In My Pocket. You will carry Him with you every day. It will help you to remember to pray and to do the right thing. When in doubt, you can think, what would Jesus do or what would Jesus want you to do. Here are my special markers. For the remainder of the class, you can color Him anyway that you would like. He is yours to keep with you so you will always have Jesus in your pocket to help you every day. This way you can share the story that you have learned today with other people and spread the love of Jesus to them.
When you come back next Sunday, you can tell me all about your week with Jesus and we will learn more fun stuff.”
Mickey carefully colored his little figurine and couldn’t wait to show it to his Mother. His Mother came to the door and Mickey ran up all excited. Mickey showed off the booklet and the plastic figurine, “Mom! I get to come back next week. Please Mom, can I? I’m sorry for being mean before. Can I, can I?”
Mom smiled, “Wow, yes, yes, we will come back every Sunday.”
Mickey put the plastic Jesus in his pocket and talked all the way home about Sunday school.
